Gareth Evans is happy with how Pompey have fared during the 2018/19 campaign.

But the midfielder knows there is plenty more work to do before the squad can depart for their summer break.

A mouth-watering two-legged clash with Sunderland awaits in the play-offs, with the first contest taking place at the Stadium of Light on Saturday evening.

And Evans is confident that the Blues can see off their opponents from the north-east to book another date at Wembley.

He said: “If you look back on the season as a whole, then we’ve got 88 points, won the Checkatrade Trophy and are competing in the play-offs.

“I think it’s been pretty successful so far, but it’s not done yet and we want to try to finish it off in style.

"We’re now into what’s pretty much a cup competition and we fancy ourselves to do a job over two legs."

“We’ve worked really hard to get to this point and it’s important that continues as we head into these Sunderland games.

“You’ve got to beat whoever’s put in front of you and it’s hard to say that you’d rather play one team over another.

“It’s always a bit of a lottery and you just have to look after your own performance and make sure you’re at your best.

Pompey finished the regular season with a 1-1 draw against Accrington, as Ben Close cancelled out Sean McConville’s opener.

Evans said: “It didn’t quite happen for us. We weren’t firing and it’s difficult to put your finger on what that was the case.

“You get days like that, but we’ve taken a lot of points in the past couple of months and can approach the play-offs full of confidence.”
