Burgess: We Have To Stay Positive

Defender still confident ahead of Lincoln clash

22 October 2019

Christian Burgess insists that Pompey have to remain positive ahead of tonight’s clash with Lincoln.

They have failed to score in either of their past two games, despite creating plenty of chances against Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon.

But there were certainly plenty of positive signs in both fixtures, with the Blues unfortunate to have collected just a single point.

And Burgess wants them to remain confident, while making sure they turn their dominance into goals.

The centre-back said: “There’s disappointment at not being where we want to be and frustration about some of the things that aren’t going for us.

“We felt we deserved more from the past two games. We’ve been the better side and got into some good areas, but just weren’t clinical enough.

“The only thing you can really do is get your head down, keep working hard and look ahead to the next match.

"It’s up to us as a group to stick together and try to put things right."

“We need to look at the positives from recent performances, while also trying to be more ruthless to take our chances. You can’t get too bogged down in negatives.

“The criticism from fans is something you have to expect in football when results aren’t going your way.

“You obviously don’t want to hear that, but it’s up to us as a group to stick together and try to put things right

“Teams have been in much worse places than we’re currently in and managed to turn things around to have a successful season.”

Pompey’s next opponents have enjoyed two promotions in three seasons and are currently sitting in mid-table.

Burgess said: “It’s nice to have another chance to put things right so soon after Saturday and if we play like we did at Wimbledon then I think we’ll be okay.

“Lincoln are a good side, but if we get off to a positive start and get an early goal, then the fans will get right behind us.”
