Jackett: We Deserved That

Delight for boss after victory at Ipswich

12 December 2020

It was performance and result that saw Pompey boost their League One promotion credentials.

Ryan Williams bagged a brace in a dominant display at Ipswich, as the visitors comfortably secured a 2-0 victory.

Both goals arrived in the first half, with the Australian winger capping a fine passing move to open the scoring and then doubling his tally for the season just before the break.

Kenny Jackett was then pleased with the way that his side continued to look dangerous following the restart, as the Tractor Boys tried in vain to get back into the contest.

The Blues boss said: “I thought we played very well and scored some excellent goals – particularly the first one, which is always key in any game.

“We then built on that very well and got the second, although I wouldn’t say I felt particularly comfortable after that.

“I always felt that we needed the third, but in the end we stood firm at the back and got what was a deserved victory.

"Ryan gets into really good areas and is an important player for us – we’re not quite the same side when he’s not involved."

“We hit the bar and twice and their keeper made a good save as well – we were still posing a threat when Ipswich were throwing men forward.

“Ryan gets into really good areas and is an important player for us – we’re not quite the same side when he’s not involved.

“I’m delighted for him with the two goals and it was a very good set from John Marquis for the first, which capped a good team move.”

The result saw Pompey move up to third in the table and Jackett was pleased with how they did at both ends of the pitch.

He said: “We’ve been in the top six for goals conceded this season, but we want to be best in every category.

“It’s been pretty good, though, and when you consider that we’re the highest scorers in the division, I’m delighted with the balance.”

The one downside for Pompey was the sight of Lee Brown limping from the pitch during the second half.

Jackett said: “He felt his hamstring straight away and had to come off. He had a similar injury at Lincoln and recovered in a week or two.

“I don’t know yet how long he’ll be out on this particular occasion, but hopefully it won’t be for too long.”
