Bath bags treble as Blues are back with a bang

13 December 2020

Becki Bath hit a hat-trick as Pompey Women returned to action with a 4-1 victory over MK Dons at Westleigh Park.

Tamsin de Bunsen was also on target for the Blues, who were in competitive action for the first time in six weeks.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that were narrowly beaten at Crawley, with Rebekah Tonks, Mia Adaway and Shannon Albuery all returning.

And the hosts started nicely with Ava Rowbotham and Hayley Bridge combining to tee-up a chance for Bath that was fired narrowly over.

But BATH did break the deadlock on 18 minutes, nipping in to steal possession and round Chloe Sansom before slotting home.

MK Dons tried to hit back, but good defending from Bridge and Danielle Rowe halted some threatening attacks.

The Blues then came close to doubling their lead just before the interval, with Albuery diverting Bridge’s cross into Sansom’s arms.

Bridge also delivered a ball into the box for Bath just after the restart, with the forward nodding just past the post.

BATH did have her second goal of the afternoon on the hour mark, though, and it was a sensational effort from 35 yards that flew into the net.

It was a similar story as she completed her treble just moments later, with another long-range BATH effort beating Sansom.

The flurry of goals continued, although it was the Dons who found the target through Jade Bell to spark hopes of a comeback.

Pompey were looking the more likely side to add to the scoring, however, and Sansom held a shot from skipper Jade Bradley.

And substitute DE BUNSEN wrapped things up in the closing stages, finishing from close-range after Sansom was unable to hold Bradley’s corner.

The same player came close to adding a fifth deep into stoppage-time, but her strike from outside of the box flashed wide.

Pompey: Haughton; Tonks, Younger, Rowe (Ingram 88); James, Rowbotham, Bradley (c), Bridge; Adaway, Albuery (True 85), Bath (de Bunsen 77)
Subs not used: Jones, Mason
