Winger targets more goals after Ipswich brace

12 December 2020

Ryan Williams had not managed to find the target this season ahead of Pompey’s visit to Portman Road.

But the winger certainly made up for lost time against Ipswich, notching a brace in an impressive 2-0 victory.

He capped a fine, flowing move in the first half and then added another just before the interval to send the Blues up to third in the League One standings.

Williams has been pleased with his general form in recent weeks, but was delighted to make a scoring contribution.

He said: “The first one was just a really good team goal and it sat up nicely for me to hit – I couldn’t really miss to be honest.

“For the second, Ronan has headed the ball down and I’ve just gambled on the space and managed to get a shot away.

“I’m really happy with it and we managed to keep a clean sheet at the other end as well, so it was a positive day.

"It’s all about being in the right place at the right time to put them away and now hopefully I can get some more."

“It’s been a bit frustrating for me, but I knew they would come at some point. It’s not really a monkey off my back because I know I can score goals.

“The important thing is to make sure that I can keep getting in the correct places – which I managed to do on this occasion.

“It’s all about being in the right place at the right time to put them away and now hopefully I can get some more.

“What I usually give to the team you don’t really see when you get the reports from Sky Sports, so it’s good to provide something on a more statistical level.

“I’m trying to make space for the other players around me to score, so it was nice for that to be the other way around this time.”

Pompey will now look to build on the result when they welcome fellow promotion hopefuls Fleetwood to Fratton Park.

Williams said: “We’ve got to look ahead to Tuesday now because we’re in a nice position and want to capitalise on that.

“I feel like I’ve been performing well and am confident in myself and the team. We’ve got a good group with a bit of everything, so it’s exciting.”
