Midfielder welcomes busy few weeks

Wembley is the target for Pompey when they host Exeter in the semi-finals of the Leasing.com Trophy this evening.

The match has been slotted into an already tight schedule, with the next few weeks also including rearranged league matches and an FA Cup clash with Arsenal.

It is a hectic run that is sure to test the depth of the Blues squad, who will not have much time to recover between fixtures.

But Ben Close believes they have the strength and technical proficiency to deal with what lies ahead this season.

The midfielder said: “We’ve got a very good squad and have got that quality to compete on three different fronts.

“We’re right in the battle for promotion from League One, we’re in this competition and we’re still in the FA Cup.

"It’s another season where we we’ll be playing a huge amount of matches, although I think we’re better prepared."

“There’s plenty of ability here and we’re ready for all the games that are coming – we’re looking forward to them.

“It’s another season where we’ll be playing a huge amount of matches, although I think we’re better prepared.

“We got to this stage last year and hit a bit of a sticky patch, but with the form we’re in at the moment, we’re approaching each one thinking we can win it.

“But you tend not to look too much at the big picture anyway and just focus on what’s immediately ahead of you.”

Pompey face an Exeter side who are sitting second in the fourth tier table, as they also try to secure promotion.

Close said: “They’re flying in League Two and have won a lot of games, so it’s going to be a tough test – just like the semi-final against Bury was last season.”
