Marquis says there's no rivalry between him and Harrison

They are often competing with each other for the same spot in the Pompey team.

But there is no bitter rivalry between John Marquis and Ellis Harrison, with the pair becoming firm friends since arriving on the south coast last summer.

Both players found the target in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury to maintain the Blues’ promotion charge.

And Marquis was full of praise for his fellow striker, who have both reached double figures for the campaign.

He said: “Ellis is a great lad and a good friend of mine – people tend to think there’s going to be a rivalry because we play in the same position.

“But it’s not like that with me and him. We get on so well and I’m really happy that he scored because he works his socks off in every game.

“He’s probably the most selfless guys I’ve ever played with because of the amount of running and physical battles.

“There aren’t always the plaudits and rewards in terms of goalscoring, so I’m glad he got one on Saturday and he deserved it.

“Shrewsbury were a really big, physical team and they’re the sort of games that really suit Ellis to a tee.

“It was an excellent header and we were both saying afterwards we were disappointed not to score more.

“The opportunities did arrive because of some good play for us and I enjoy every moment we’re on the field together.

“It does work for me personally when there’s another striker on the pitch and we looked more of a threat in the second half.”
