Match Preview: Lincoln v Pompey

Everything you need to know about League One contest

28 January 2020

Pompey might be fighting on three fronts, but it is the league that represents their most important battle.

And the quest for points continues at Sincil Bank this evening, as Kenny Jackett’s side take on Lincoln.

Their opponents are currently sitting 12th in the table in their first season at this level for 21 years – and are not out of the running for a promotion spot themselves.

The Imps are only five adrift of the play-off spaces, although have played more games than most of the sides above them.

Former Blues boss Michael Appleton is the man currently in charge, having been appointed manager back in September.

He has the tough task of following in the footsteps of the Cowley brothers, who masterminded the club’s rise up the divisions before leaving for Huddersfield.

Lincoln have impressed on their own patch this season, having dropped points on just three occasions and beaten the likes of Sunderland and Ipswich.

In fact, you have to go all the way back to November 20 to find the last time they failed to win at home.

Pompey have not paid a visit to Sincil Bank since their 1982/83 Division Three title-winning campaign, when Billy Rafferty’s brace and a goal from Steve Aizlewood secured a 3-0 victory.

It was a closer affair when the sides met on the south coast earlier in the current season, with John Marquis’ strike settling a scrappy contest.

Joe's Injury Update: Lincoln (A)

27 January 2020

TEAM NEWS
Andy Cannon limped off towards the end of Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Barnsley, but is not an injury doubt.

Pompey could also welcome back Lee Brown and Ross McCrorie, with the duo both returning to full training.

It leaves Bryn Morris (groin) as the only member of the Blues squad who is currently in the treatment room.

Lincoln also have no fresh injuries to worry about, but recent signing Tom Hopper could make his first start up front.
