Cameron McGeehan collected Marcus Harness’ pass and slotted home the winning goal to settle a Leasing.com Trophy quarter-final clash with Scunthorpe.
That came shortly after John Marquis’ opener had been cancelled out by an impressive Abo Eisa finish.
And the loan midfielder – who arrived from Barnsley earlier this month – was delighted to make such a positive contribution.
He said: “It’s good to get my fitness back and rediscover a bit of rhythm, while scoring my first goal is another box ticked.
“We’re through to the next round – which is the most important thing – and I thought we countered really well.
"This is a good competition for giving teams a chance of getting to Wembley and hopefully we can go all the way."
“Marcus found me nicely with the pass and I always fancy myself to score. It’s nice to get off the mark because it’s a monkey off your back.
“We looked quite solid and let Scunthorpe have the ball a bit, while looking to then break quickly on them.
“This is a good competition for giving teams a chance of getting to Wembley and hopefully we can go all the way.”
McGeehan will not be able to feature against his parent club when they visit Fratton Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
He said: “It was quite funny how the draw panned out, but I’ll be here to support the lads and fancy us to get through.
“I haven’t spoken to Conor (Chaplin) too much, although we’re all hoping that he has a bit of an off day!
“He came through the academy here and is well liked, so I’m sure he’ll get a good reception and it’s up to the boys to keep him quiet.”
