Williams: We're On The Up

Winger interviewed in Barnsley programme

24 January 2020

Ryan Williams has played Championship football with Fulham, Barnsley and Rotherham.

But the Australian winger admits that reaching the second tier with Pompey would mean that much more.

He progressed through the ranks at Fratton Park before departing more than seven years ago, only to make a return last summer.

And ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup clash with Barnsley, Williams revealed that he is happy with where the Blues currently find themselves.

“When I left it was on the descent, but now it’s on the ascent,” he says in the official matchday magazine for the fourth round tie. We were dropping out of the Championship and now we’re trying to get back into it.

"Having fallen all the way down from the top-flight to League Two, to get back into the second tier would be an amazing achievement."

“I’ve played there with a few clubs, but this is the one that would mean the most to me because it’s where I started.

“Having fallen all the way down from the top-flight to League Two, to get back into the second tier would be an amazing achievement.

“I think we’re in a very strong position because although we’re sitting seventh, we’re in only six points off top spot and there are still plenty of games to go.”

To read the full interview – where Williams also discusses competing in the FA Cup and facing his former club – pick up your copy of the magazine from programme sellers around the ground.

Also in issue 21, Pompey stars reveal their favourite cup memories, while Ronan Curtis selects his dream dinner party guests.

We take an extensive look at Barnsley, while there are exclusive columns from chief executive Mark Catlin, manager Kenny Jackett, skipper Tom Naylor and broadcaster Ian Darke.

All this and much, much more can be found in a packed 84 pages, with the programme priced just £3.
