Pompey are mourning the loss of Alan Garner, who has sadly passed away at the age of 69.
The defender scored three goals in 44 appearances for the Blues after being recruited from Watford in February 1980.
He made his debut in a narrow defeat at York and played just a handful of times during that Division Four promotion campaign.
But he enjoyed more time on the pitch the following season and forged an impressive partnership with Steve Aizlewood at the heart of the back-line.
Garner – who had previously won successive promotions with Watford and previously appeared for Millwall and Luton – saw his appearances restricted by injuries, however.
He was allowed to leave Fratton Park when Bobby Campbell replaced Frank Burrows as manager and finished his career with Barnet.
The thoughts of everyone at Portsmouth Football Club are with Alan’s family and friends at this sad time.
