Best+Worst: Gareth Evans

Pompey midfielder in the hot-seat

14 May 2020

Pompey midfielder Gareth Evans selects some of his bests and worsts...

What is the best game you have been involved in?
It was the game against Cheltenham when we won the title. It was a pretty emphatic 6-1 win and the whole day was full of drama, plus I found myself on the scoresheet.

What is the best goal you have ever scored?
It was a goal for Bradford when I chested down a long ball and put it in top corner on the half-volley. I can’t remember who it was against, but it was nominated for ‘Goal of the Year’.

Who is the best player you have appeared alongside?
He was winding down at the time, but I’d probably say Lee Hendrie at Bradford. He was still sharp and had that bit of extra quality.

Who is the best player you have come up against?
I’ll go for Tim Cahill when I was at Macclesfield and we played Everton in the FA Cup. You couldn’t get near him that day.

What is the best thing currently on television?
I’ve been watching an ITV drama called ‘A Confession’, which is pretty good.

What is the worst thing about being a footballer?
It’s got to be injuries. I’ve been quite lucky with them, but it’s never nice to when you’re out.

What is the worst game you have been involved in?
It was a Crewe at home in the season when we went up – it got pretty toxic that day.

Who is the worst dressed player in the Pompey dressing room?
Christian Burgess – nobody else even comes close.

What is the worst food to eat?
I don’t like smoked mackerel. I’m not a picky eater, but can’t stand the smell of that.

What is the worst thing that is currently on television?
I’m not really into soaps. I’ll say Emmerdale, just to annoy our kit-man Clarky.
