Jordy Hiwula was a League One title winner with Coventry last term and has scored plenty of goals at this level.
But at the moment he is being kept out of the Pompey team by the division’s top scorer and most in-form striker.
Seven goals in the space of five games means John Marquis is proving to be extremely difficult to dislodge.
But Hiwula – who signed a short-term deal last month – led the line in a midweek Papa John’s Trophy clash and is ready to take his next chance when it comes.
He said: “I just need to keep plugging away – I got 90 minutes against West Ham the other night and have to continue working hard in training.
“It’s obviously up to the manager whether he decides to pick me and I need to make sure I remain in his eyeline.
"The guys who have been in the team for most of the league games have been performing, but you need to keep pushing."
“There are loads of good attacking players at this club and everyone seems to complement each other really well.
“The guys who have been in the team for most of the league games have been performing, but you need to keep pushing. We’re all pulling in the right direction.
“Having a short contract adds a bit of pressure – especially when you’re at such a big club – although you always have to deal with that in football.”
Pompey’s game at Plymouth on Monday night is a clash between the sides with League One’s best away and home records respectively.
Hiwula said: “It’s been unbelievable. We need to keep getting those positive results on the road and see where that can take us.
“Both sides are really strong in this division and so hopefully it’s going to be a really entertaining game.
“We have to make sure we show exactly what we’re capable of and try to come away with all three points.”
