Marcus Harness bagged a hat-trick against his former club, as Pompey recorded their first League One win of the season.
But they had to fight from behind to secure a 4-2 victory at Burton, with Lucas Akins cancelling out Harness' opener before a Tom Naylor own-goal put the hosts in front.
Harness levelled for Kenny Jackett's side straight after the interval and, after Jack Whatmough had restored Pompey's lead, then completed his treble with a fine effort.
