John Marquis is keen to show that he can help fire Pompey into promotion contention this season.
An injury to Ellis Harrison saw him restored to the starting line-up for the midweek visit to Gillingham.
And the striker responded in fine fashion by grabbing an impressive opener and then playing a role in Michael Jacobs’ second of the evening in a 2-0 triumph.
The Blues now head north to face an unbeaten Sunderland side on Saturday and Marquis is keen to show what he can do.
He said: “You’re always looking to play well, try to win and – as a striker – also score some goals if possible.
“Ellis had been a key figure for us over the past few weeks and done a good job, but he’s picked up an injury.
"I’ve scored in each of my last two starts for the club now and so hopefully that can continue at Sunderland."
“I know what I’m capable of and that I can score goals at this level – I have done for the past few years.
“Gillingham was an opportunity to show what I can do and being on the bench might have freshened me up a bit.
“With the extension of the season for the play-offs and not a lot of time to rest over the summer, I’ve perhaps been able to sharpen up in training and the gym.
“I’ve scored in each of my last two starts for the club now and so hopefully that can continue at Sunderland.
“This was always going to be a tough week – and it obviously didn’t start the way we wanted against Doncaster.
“But we responded well against Gillingham and can look to take that result and performance up north.”
