Championship Goal For Johnson

New signing believe he is a perfect match for Pompey

7 September 2020

Callum Johnson missed out on the chance to make his first Fratton Park appearance back in March.

The Covid-19 pandemic brought the League One campaign to a halt just a day before his Accrington side were due to play on the south coast.

But the right-back should now get plenty of opportunities to impress on Pompey’s turf after signing for Kenny Jackett’s side.

And with the Blues missing out on promotion in the play-offs in successive seasons, Johnson is hoping he can help them achieve some success.

The 23-year-old said: “The ambition of this club matches my own – we want to get up into the Championship.

“With the size of Pompey, the manager and the fans here, it all ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’m delighted to be here.

“I’ve never played at Fratton Park before, although have heard good things about the atmosphere and how difficult it is for sides to come here and get a point.

“Accrington were supposed to be coming down in March and I was looking forward to it, but the season got cancelled the day before.

“I played for them in the cup on Friday night and it was nice to be back after such a long time without any competitive football.”

Johnson is comfortable being utilised anywhere across the defensive line and has also featured in midfield.

He said: “I’m happy to play in any position, but for the majority of my career I’ve been used as a right-sided full-back.

“That’s where I enjoy playing the most and also where I feel I can perform to my best. It’s good to have some versatility, though.

“I’m a defender and that’s what, first and foremost, I like doing. But I also want to get forward and give the attacking players some good deliveries.”
