Yeovil 2 Pompey Women 2

Blues open season with a draw

20 September 2020

Pompey Women twice battled from behind to secure a point at Yeovil on the opening day of the new National League season.

Katie James brushed off an earlier missed penalty to grab the first equaliser, while Jade Widdows grabbed the second from the spot.

Ava Rowbotham started after making her loan move permanent over the summer, but fellow arrivals Kat Cunningham and Abi Mason had to be content with a place on the bench.

It was the hosts that threatened first in Taunton, with Laura Williams dragging a shot just past the post.

And they broke the deadlock on 13 minutes, when Annie Heatherson fired home a low shot at the far post.

But the Blues were quickly given a chance to level when a foul in the box was penalised, only for James to send her penalty against the post.

A ferocious 30-yard rocket from Becki Bath was then tipped onto the post by Behany-May Howard, but the referee robbed the keeper of acclaim by awarding a goal-kick.

Half Time: Yeovil 1 Pompey 0

The visitors came charging out of the traps following the restart and Rowbotham fired over after being teed-up by Widdows.

And the latter then appeared to be taken out illegally as she charged through on goal, although another questionable decision by the officials ensured no action was taken.

But JAMES soon made up for her earlier miss by collecting a pass from the impressive Widdows and firing home.

The Blues were on top and came close to forging ahead, only for Rowbotham’s effort to narrowly clear the crossbar.

Instead, however, Yeovil restored their lead, as a cross from Ellie Sargent was deftly headed into the net by Heatherson.

Pompey then immediately hit back to draw level once more, with a penalty awarded despite the home side’s appeals that a challenge on Widdows had taken place outside the box.

It was WIDDOWS who dusted herself down to take the spot-kick and calmly stroked the ball into the bottom corner.

The Blues were unable to find another goal, though, as both sides had to settle for a point to open the 2020/21 campaign.
