Lee Brown could make his return to the Pompey side at Accrington on Tuesday evening.
The left-back has been sidelined since limping off with a hamstring problem against Burton just over a fortnight ago.
Danny Cowley reverted to a 3-4-3 system against Bristol Rovers at the weekend, guiding his side to a crucial 1-0 victory.
But with plenty of injured players in the squad right now, he is pleased to have another option at his disposal.
The Blues boss said: “I’m pleased to say that we came through Saturday’s game pretty well, with no new problems.
"We’ll have Lee Brown available at Accrington, which is really good news because it allows us to return to a back four if we want."
“That’s very positive because, as everyone knows, we are down to the bare bones at the moment, with a lot of guys in the treatment room.

“I thought we did well with a three-man defence against the Bristol Rovers, though, and it’s nice to have that string to our bow.
“Tom Naylor played with a hamstring problem at the weekend, but he feels better now, so that’s another positive.”
