Debut delight for Khassal in thumping Blues win

15 August 2021

Cherelle Khassal scored four goals on her debut as Pompey Women began the new season with a 5-1 rout of Plymouth.

Strike partner Shannon Albuery also found the target in the National League Southern Premier Division encounter at Westleigh Park, which saw the visitors reduced to 10 players.

Jay Sadler also handed starts to summer signings Evie Gane and Dani Lane, while Emma Jones, Sammy Quayle and Jaime Gotch were named on the bench.

The Blues soon took control of the contest and Khassal fired an early shot over before nodding a Gane delivery past the post.

Lane then embarked on a purposeful drive through the centre, only to be denied by Pilgrims keeper Poppy Soper.

The chances kept coming and Jazz Younger headed just wide from Rosie McDonnell’s corner, while Khassal dragged an effort off target.

Pompey were showcasing some neat passing football and after combining with Lane, a Hayley Bridge cross just missed the head of Albuery.

But the visitors almost took the lead against the run of play on 26 minutes, as Zoe Cunningham smashed a shot against the post.

Normal service soon resumed, however, and Ava Rowbotham struck the bar, then was denied for an alleged foul after finally finding the net.

Plymouth’s hopes of continuing to frustrate their hosts were dealt a blow after the restart, when Olivia Ramsey was sent off for bringing down Khassal on the edge of the box.

Pompey soon made the most of their numerical advantage, as ALBUERY stole possession, burst forward and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

The lead did not last long, though, as a free-kick eventually fell to Rebecca Dandridge, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Sadler made changes to try to inspire another breakthrough and the Blues did go back ahead on 71 minutes.

Substitute Jade Bradley whipped a corner towards the near post, where KHASSAL was waiting to open her account.

That was the cue for the floodgates to open and KHASSAL grabbed another from the spot after being brought down in the box by Soper.

The hat-trick was then completed in the closing stages, as KHASSAL took advantage of a pin-point Danielle Rowe delivery to nod home another.

But there was still time for one more goal in stoppage-time, with KHASSAL capitalising on good work from Younger before placing a shot into the net.

Pompey: Haughton; Tonks (E.Jones 60), Younger, Gane; Rowe (c), Bridge (Bradley 68), Rowbotham (Gotch 80), Lane (F.Jones 90), McDonnell; Khassal, Albuery (Quayle 68)
