Match Preview: Pompey Women v Southampton

Blues in action at Fratton Park

15 December 2021

Pompey Women

Pompey Women will take to the pitch at Fratton Park for the fourth time when they host Southampton this evening (8pm kick-off).

The National League contest is the second south coast derby to take place in the space of just four days.

Westleigh Park hosted an FA Cup third round contest on Sunday afternoon, with the side from the west end of the M27 scraping through.

The Blues created plenty of chances, but only had Cherelle Khassal’s strike to show for their efforts at the interval.

And their opponents equalised through Lucia Kendall before Caitlin Morris struck an extra-time winner.

That ensured Southampton gained revenge for May’s Hampshire Cup final, when Hannah Haughton’s heroics saw Pompey win on penalties.

Tonight sees Jay Sadler’s side return to National League action for the first time in more than seven weeks, with their past five fixtures all coming in other competitions.

They currently sit seventh in the standings, but have games in hand on most other sides in the division.

Southampton have played the joint fewest matches, though, and are in third spot, with their only defeat to date coming against leaders Ipswich.

A mention of 9-0 might make fans of the men’s team shudder, but the women have won twice by that scoreline this season – against Hounslow and Keynsham.

NHS COVID-19 PASS
The fixture will be used to pilot the use of NHS Covid-19 passes at Fratton Park.

These will be required (or evidence of a negative lateral flow test) for all supporters attending the men's first team match against Oxford United on Boxing Day and from then until further notice.

While proof of vaccination for this women's fixture is not mandatory, supporters are encouraged to have their pass ready on their phones (ideally stored in their digital wallet) or carry a paper copy.

This will help staff gain an understanding of the process for when it comes into effect from Boxing Day
