Gotch and Rowbotham on target in league victory

19 December 2021

Pompey Women saw out 2021 on a high by securing a 2-0 National League victory over London Bees at Westleigh Park.

Goals from Jaime Gotch and Ava Rowbotham ensured that the Blues could celebrate a happy Christmas.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that were unfortunate to lose the south coast derby at Fratton Park earlier in the week.

Rebekah Tonks, Freya Jones and Tamsin de Bunsen were all restored to the starting line-up, with Jazz Younger, Dani Lane and Hayley Bridge making way.

The hosts showed plenty of purpose in the opening stages, although an audacious chipped effort from de Bunsen flew past the post.

But the deadlock was broken on nine minutes, as Faye Hazelton fumbled a de Bunsen corner and GOTCH nodded home her first goal for the club.

The Bees keeper also failed to deal with a free-kick from de Bunsen, although this time Shannon Albuery was unable to convert the loose ball.

Hannah Haughton was not being overly troubled at the other end, but did have to deal with a Jo Wilson delivery.

It was Pompey looking more likely to add to the scoring and Hazelton kept out a long-range de Bunsen effort before Gotch fizzed an attempt over.

The hosts made the perfect start to the second half, with ROWBOTHAM firing home a free-kick after Albuery had been upended on the edge of the box.

Their opponents tried to hit back just past the hour mark and Haughton tipped Wilson’s strike around the post.

Jade Widdows and Bridge both came off the bench to add some fresh legs to the Blues and the former was denied by Hazelton.

Then, moments later, de Bunsen whipped in a cross from out wide that Albuery could only divert over.

Bridge also tried to put the result beyond doubt, only to be denied by a superb last-gasp block from Sophie Lee.

The chances kept coming and Rosie McDonnell diverted a delivery from skipper Danielle Rowe inches wide.

It mattered not, however, as the Blues had already done enough to ensure they would enter the festive break on a high.
