Pompey Complete Cup Double

Blues beat Moneyfields 3-1 on penalties

3 June 2021

Pompey Women saw off Moneyfields on penalties at Westleigh Park to retain the Portsmouth Divisional FA Cup.

It was a repeat of the 2019/20 showpiece – delayed by Covid until last October – which saw the Blues triumph 4-1.

But despite creating plenty of chances inside 90 minutes, they were denied by the post and crossbar on several occasions.

Pompey got the job done in the shoot-out, however, to add the silverware to the Hampshire Cup trophy collected last month.

It was a fitting send-off for Katie James, who was handed the captain’s armband in her final appearance for the club.

Jay Sadler made four changes from the side that smashed 12 unanswered goals past Portchester in the previous week’s semi-final.

Rebekah Tonks, Jazz Younger, Hayley Bridge and James replaced Eilidh Currie, Abi Mason, Freya Jones and Kat Cunningham.

The Blues dominated the early exchanges and had a chance to break the deadlock through Ava Rowbotham’s curling effort, only for it to be tipped over.

James then collected a loose ball midway through the first half and hit a fierce strike that left the crossbar rattling.

And, with pressure mounting, the woodwork also came to Moneyfields’ rescue on two more occasions before the interval.

Jade Widdows did well to weave her way into the area before angling in an effort that came back off the post.

Rowbotham was there for the follow-up, but she struck the bar as Pompey’s opponents held on to the interval.

Bridge was first to threaten following the restart, firing narrowly over after driving into the box from the right.

And substitute Currie was then denied by the keeper after bursting forward, as the Blues kept pushing for an opener.

Shannon Albuery did have the ball in the back of the net on 83 minutes, only for celebrations to be cut short by an offside flag.

The woodwork then denied Pompey once more late on, with James collecting a short free-kick from Danielle Rowe and thundering a shot against the bar.

The pressure did not abate as the seconds ticked down, but Moneyfields managed to hold on to force penalties.

Both sides netted their first efforts from the spot, with Ciara Boylan’s strike quickly cancelled out by Currie.

But Moneyfields missed their next three – with two going off target and another saved by Hannah Haughton.

And although Rowe was denied by Lauren Sayler, Widdows found the net before Rowbotham hit the winner.

Pompey: Haughton; Tonks (Jones 55), Younger, Ingram (Currie 69); Bridge, James (c), Rowe, Rowbotham; Adaway (Cunningham 69), Albuery, Widdows
Subs not used: Mason, Laidlaw
