Tunnicliffe: Not A Step Down

Midfielder wants to help Blues get back to the Championship

30 June 2021

Ryan Tunnicliffe has vacated the Championship to join Pompey, but does not want to be absent for long.

The midfielder has appeared in the second tier for eight different clubs, most recently helping Luton to establish themselves in the division.

He is now hoping to help Pompey get there after being snapped up by Danny Cowley at the weekend.

Tunnicliffe was given a couple of extra days off before beginning pre-season training after getting married on Monday.

But after linking up with his new team-mates for the first time, the 28-year-old is raring to go on the south coast

He said: “First and foremost, this is a massive club. I spoke to the manager and he told me how much he wanted me here.

“It’s obviously a step down from the Championship, but I don’t really see it like that because it’s an opportunity for me to help Pompey get promoted.

"I’m in my prime and have learnt a lot over the years, while athletically I’m fine, so I want to bring energy, good performances and become a real fan favourite."

“I’ve been at some really big clubs during my career, so hopefully I can pass some of that knowledge on.

“I’m in my prime and have learnt a lot over the years, while athletically I’m fine, so I want to bring energy, good performances and become a real fan favourite.

“It’s been a long year without any supporters inside the ground, but I’ve played at Fratton Park before and know the atmosphere is special. I can’t wait to see the place rocking.”

Tunnicliffe is looking forward to partnering fellow new signing Shaun Williams in Pompey’s midfield after the duo appeared together at Millwall.

He said: “It’s another reason why I decided to come down here and play. I’m really excited to be honest.

“We complement each other well – he’s more of a sitter and likes to dictate, which gives me the opportunity to press, chase and go from box to box.

“It was a good partnership when we were at Millwall and hopefully it can be a good partnership again.”
