Pompey suffered penalty shoot-out heartache against Salford in the Papa John's Trophy final against Salford.
Kenny Jackett's side started poorly in the contest – which had been postponed a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic – and Craig MacGillivray made a number of fine saves.
But they improved as the match wore on and had several chances to win the tie, particularly during extra-time.
The Blues were only able to convert two of their four spot-kicks, however, and Salford made no mistake to lift the trophy for the first time.
