West Brom 2 Pompey Women 1

Blues beaten in friendly fixture

2 May 2021

Pompey were beaten in a friendly contest with West Brom at Sutton Coldfield, despite taking the lead from the penalty spot.

Becki Bath had fired them ahead midway through the first half, but the Baggies hit back to claim the spoils.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that drew with Arsenal on home soil the previous week.

Mia Adaway, Charmaine True and Katie James all returned to the starting line-up, with Hayley Bridge, Jade Widdows and Shannon Albuery making way.

Bath calmly converted from the spot on 27 minutes after being fouled in the box by the opposition keeper.

And they had an opportunity to double the lead, with True seeing her header saved after meeting a Jade Bradley corner.

But the hosts went in level at the break, even though there were suspicions of offside about their equaliser.

And a close-range header at the back post then saw West Brom forge into the lead early in the second half.

Pompey’s best chance to hit back came when Albuery pulled the ball back for James on the edge of the box, but she was unable to beat the keeper.

Pompey: Haughton; Rowe, Tonks, Currie; Adaway, Rowbotham, Bradley (c), Cunningham; Bath, True, James
Subs: Younger, Widdows, Bridge, Albuery
