Jacobs: What A Feeling

Substitute reflects on late drama at Priestfield

27 November 2021

Michael Jacobs hailed the moment of magic that saw Pompey snatch victory at Gillingham right at the death.

The substitute fired in a low shot that deflected off defender Jack Tucker and flew into the net with just a few seconds remaining.

Prior to that, most people inside Priestfield probably would have admitted that a 0-0 draw was a fair result.

So Jacobs was delighted to emerge from the bench and have such a positive impact in extending the Blues’ winning run.

He said: “I think it’s mine because it was just about on target and it was great to celebrate with those fans, who were amazing.

“There’s no roof on that stand they were in, but they supported us all the way through and it probably wasn’t the best watch.

“Ronan took a quick throw and it didn’t really sit properly, so I took a touch and put it in a good area, with the ball just hitting the centre-half and finding the bottom corner.

“To get the goal so late was a great feeling and it settled a tight game, with both sides creating a few chances.

“It’s great just to help out the team, especially at the moment when we’re short on numbers and all pulling together.”

Pompey certainly had to fight to contend with their physical opponents and Jacobs felt they stood up to the challenge.

He said: “We always knew it was going to be a bit of a battle with the conditions and the way Gillingham play.

“But we’ve gone to places like Priestfield and to Wycombe and come away with not only wins, but also clean sheets.

“The boys at the back were fantastic and the formation has suited us, while I just wanted to take my chance when I came on.

“It was the same for Ellis Harrison and Miguel Azeez, who were brought on and gave us a bit more impetus.”
