Blues progress in FA Cup

28 November 2021

Pompey Women booked their place in their third round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at Westleigh Park.

Shannon Albuery’s header got the higher-ranked home side off to an excellent start, only for Lucy Cooper to draw the visitors level.

But Evie Gane struck for the Blues late in the first half and they saw out the second half in relatively comfortable fashion.

Jay Sadler made three changes from the side that hit 13 unanswered goals past Dorking in the last round a fortnight earlier.

Gane, Hayley Bridge and Dani Lane all returned to the starting line-up, with Rebekah Tonks, Freya Jones and Rosie McDonnell dropping to the bench.

The hosts got off to an excellent start and broke the deadlock before three minutes had even passed.

There was no surprise about the identity of the person who found the net, with top scorer ALBUERY nodding home after Tamsin de Bunsen’s free-kick had been flicked on by Cherelle Khassal.

But the Cherries immediately hit back, with Cooper quickest to the loose ball after her initial attempt had been saved by Hannah Haughton.

Pompey were soon back on the attack and an audacious long-range attempt from de Bunsen flew narrowly wide.

Khassal then cut inside and fired in an effort that was kept out by Cherries keeper Sam Chrippes on 18 minutes.

Albuery was next to go close after collecting a pass over the top by de Bunsen, but she could only fire straight at Chrippes.

But the Blues did retake the lead before the break, as a corner led to a scramble in the box and de Bunsen fizzed in a low ball that was turned home by GANE.

Khassal had the ball in the back of the net again following the restart, but a flag had been raised for offside.

Danielle Rowe then showcased some fine defending to clear the danger after a loose pass allowed Cooper to break clear.

It was Cooper who was looking most likely to find an equaliser for the visitors and her shot just past the hour mark was superbly saved at point-blank range by Haughton.

Sadler used all three substitutions to inject some fresh energy into his side as the minutes ticked down.

And the Blues had to survive some late pressure from Bournemouth before being able to celebrate safe passage to round three.

Pompey: Haughton; Rowe (c), Gotch, Gane; Bridge (McDonnell 73), Rowbotham, Lane, Quayle; Khassal, de Bunsen (Widdows 81), Albuery (F.Jones 66)
Subs not used: Tonks, Younger
