Match Preview: Pompey Women v Chichester

Blues in midweek action at Westleigh Park

3 October 2021

Pompey Women return to action on Wednesday evening, as they welcome Chichester & Selsey to Westleigh Park for a National League contest (8pm kick-off).

Jay Sadler's side hosted the same opponents in the determining round of the League Cup in September.

Megan Fox struck a long-range effort in the first half, while a late own-goal from Danielle Rowe meant it was the away side that progressed into the next round.

Pompey will be hoping to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat to Gillingham in the league on Sunday.

Blues boss Sadler said: "It's good that we've got a game coming straight away. We've now got two home games where we need to show a different side to us.

"We are hurting right now, but we can't lick our wounds. We've got to bounce back straight away and there's no better game to do that."

The last home league meeting between Pompey and Chichester came back in March 2019.

Katie James opened the scoring for the Blues with a driven free-kick early on, while Jade Bradley also scored from a set-piece to double the lead.

Chichester replied through Jess Lewry and then had two chances to level from the penalty spot within five minutes, but Blues stopper Hannah Haughton denied both efforts.

Rachel Panting wrapped up victory for Pompey in the closing stages with a rocket from outside the area.

Tomorrow's visitors sit 11th in the National League standings, with four points picked up from seven games.

Their only victory of the season so far came against Oxford, while they also battled from behind to pick up a point against London Bees.
