Pompey Academy bounced back from their heavy defeat at Southend to claim a Merit League point against Exeter.

But they had to recover from the disappointment of conceding two early goals to the Grecians at Copnor Road.

Mitch Aston reduced their deficit midway through the first half and it looked like that would be as good as it got for the Blues.

However, a long pass from Jack Fox in stoppage-time was collected by a trialist, who lobbed the keeper to ensure the spoils would be shared.

Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “We started slowly and did not come out of the blocks quick enough.

“Our opponents pressed us high up the pitch and we were caught flat-footed – we were two goals down before we knew it.

“Fair play to the players, though – particularly after the previous week, when we didn’t rally enough after a tough opening.

"All of our substitutes made an impact, which is what you want to see, and it was good to see us fight back to get a point, which was the least we deserved."

“We did that this time around and were able to cause some problems. From that point onwards, we were the side with momentum.

“Mitch received the ball, cut back and calmly finished into the opposite corner to ensure we made our pressure count.

“We kept on pushing and could have scored more, but missed chances and it didn’t look like we would get anything from the game.

“Then, in the third minute of stoppage-time, Jack played a long ball and one of our trialists sent the ball over their keeper.

“All of our substitutes made an impact, including Spencer Spurway after a long injury lay-off, which is what you want to see, and it was good to see us fight back to get a point, which was the least we deserved.

“But the lads just need to remember that they have to set their stall out early and play in the correct way for the full 90 minutes.”

Pompey: Steward; Trialist, Fox, Vincent (Spurway 74), Laidlaw; Jewitt-White, Aston (Bosaka 74), Trialist; Kamavuako, Trialist (Hurst 84), Howell (Trialist 74)
