Watching another side celebrating promotion at Fratton Park would have been too much for George Hirst to bear.

So he was delighted to play a huge role in a dramatic Pompey victory over Wigan that delayed the visitors’ promotion party.

Despite dominating for much of the first half, the home side found themselves 2-0 down at the break.

But Hirst struck twice in as many minutes when the action restarted before Aiden O’Brien came off the bench and fired home a late winner.

And the man who got the Blues back on track felt they deserved to emerge from the contest with all three points.

Hirst said: “It was pretty special and the fans were ridiculous – it was a pleasure to be part of that game.

“I thought that all the boys from back to front were superb and we were brilliant, not thinking we’d done much wrong after going in 2-0 behind.

"There was no chance that was happening on our turf – we didn’t want them to come to Fratton Park and win the title."

“We just had to collect our thoughts and not get too down, which just goes to show the strength of this team.

“It would be quite easy for us to have gone under – especially when we’re facing a team that’s top of the league.

“But there was no chance that was happening on our turf – we didn’t want them to come to Fratton Park and win the title.

“So we went out in the second half and tried our best to put on a show, which is exactly what we were able to do.”

Hirst’s double took the on-loan Leicester striker’s total for the season to 14, with all but two of them having arrived since the turn of the year.

He said: “Confidence is massive and I feel like there’s a goal for me in every single game at the moment.

“I’ve got to keep working as hard as possible and on nights like this one, you end up getting your just rewards.

“I wasn’t at it in the early part of the season, but I’ve played a lot of games now and the goals have come.”
