Striker delighted to score against his former club

13 April 2022

George Hirst’s Rotherham record includes 32 appearances, but just four starts and not a single goal.

But the striker has certainly found life more enjoyable on the south coast, recovering from a slow start to reach double figures.

His 11th of the season came against his former club on Tuesday night, hooking the ball home after Sean Raggett had nodded it into his path.

That completed a 3-0 victory against a side in contention for the title, with Hirst also providing an earlier assist for Marcus Harness.

“It’s about as good as it gets,” beamed the Leicester loanee. “I thought that all the lads were excellent – from back to front.

“It’s always a little bit sweeter to score against your former club and I came off the back of a difficult year at Rotherham.

"When we got on the ball, we were brave and aggressive going forward and needed that reaction after Cheltenham."

“I can’t put the blame on them for that because I probably wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t the right fit for me at the time, so it was nice to get on the scoresheet.

“We had control from minute one against a really direct side, which is something I probably knew better than most of the lads in the changing room.

“Robbo and I were both there last season and so we gave as much information as we could about what to expect.

“We dealt with that really well. Michael Smith is the best striker in the league and we kept him as quiet as possible.

“Then when we got on the ball, we were brave and aggressive going forward and needed that reaction after Cheltenham, which wasn’t acceptable.

“Now we want to finish the season strongly and show everyone what we can do. We're looking to pick up as many points as possible.”
