Hirst: We Want To End On A High

Striker prepares to face former club

29 April 2022

George Hirst does not expect the red carpet to be rolled out for him at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The striker left Sheffield Wednesday to sign for Belgian side OH Leuven as a teenager, then made the switch to Leicester a year later.

He will now return to face his former club for Pompey on the final day of the 2021/22 League One campaign.

And although the hosts need a victory to guarantee their place in the play-offs, Hirst is hoping the Blues can continue their own good form.

He said: “We want to finish the season with another win and, on a personal level, I’d like to score some more goals.

“Sheffield Wednesday are my boyhood club and that will never change, so it’s nice for me to go back there.

“It’s going to be a fun for me – although I’m not expecting the greatest reception when I enter the pitch!

“That’s all part of the theatre, bit I’ll only be concentrating on trying to make sure we can end on a real high.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces on Saturday before doing my best to produce a performance that I – and all our fans – can be proud of.”

Saturday is the final match of Hirst’s season-long loan spell and he is unsure about what the future holds.

He said: “I’ve loved every minute of my time here and there’s one game left, so I’m just thinking about that currently.

“There have been chats with the manager and he’s said some nice things about me, which is always great to hear. We’ll just have to see what happens.”
