Cowley: The Relationship Is Growing

Boss hails backing from stands ahead of Bristol Rovers clash

19 August 2022

Danny Cowley has felt a growing connection between his side and the Fratton faithful.

He was impressed with the manner in which the fans stuck with them after falling behind against Cambridge in Tuesday.

Supporters were rewarded with a fine comeback in the 4-1 victory, which included some well-worked team goals.

And Cowley believes that level of patient backing will help Pompey produce more entertaining football.

The Blues boss said: “It’s been a good start, but as I’ve said before, we are still very much a work in progress.

“Tuesday night was a positive one for this club and I was pleased with how both the players and supporters responded to us falling behind.

“Michael Morrison actually spoke in our meeting about how the crowd had stayed with us and the will of everyone in the stadium allowed the players to remain positive.

“The way we want to play does involve an element of risk and if you concede and the crowd get edgy, that can transfer to the side.

“You then don’t start taking as many risks, play in a conservative manner and become pretty bland on the pitch.

"We’re totally respectful that it’s us who have to bring the performance and if we do that, the supporters will provide energy from the stands."

“Human connections take time to build and heading out and meeting the people – showing them the human qualities – goes a long way with our fans.

“The relationship is growing all the time and we’re five unbeaten this season – 12 unbeaten at Fratton Park. The trust is building.

“We’re totally respectful that it’s us who have to bring the performance and if we do that, the supporters will provide energy from the stands.”

Pompey now welcome a Bristol Rovers side who are back in the third tier after a dramatic promotion success.

Cowley said: “They had a rollercoaster of a season last year and have taken some of that confidence and momentum into the current campaign.

“There have been two wins from their first four games and some astute signings, with a good mix of youth and experience.

“I heard Joey Barton speak about his aspirations for them to be the first team in Bristol to reach the Premier League, so we know they’re ambitious.

“We anticipate a really tough game and I expect them to be competitive and organised. It’s a great challenge for us.”

Cowley has provided a positive update on the fitness of skipper Clark Robertson, as well as Joe Morrell and Denver Hume.

He said: “They’ve trained all week, which is absolutely brilliant news for us, and they’ll be available for selection on Saturday.”
