Pompey switch their attention from gaining points to trying to progress in the Carabao Cup this evening.
After seeing off Championship opponents Cardiff a fortnight ago, there is a quick return to south Wales for Danny Cowley’s side.
This time it is Newport from League Two who stand between the Blues and the next stage of the competition (7.45pm kick-off).
That is where the top-flight clubs competing in Europe enter the competition, which provides an added incentive.
The Exiles also won on the road at a second tier side in round one, twice battling from behind before securing a 3-2 victory at Luton.
James Rowberry’s men are currently sitting 19th in the table, with four points from their opening five games.
Their first success came against Tranmere at Rodney Parade at the weekend and brought welcome relief following three successive defeats.
The sides have not met since Pompey’s triumphant 2016/17 League Two title campaign, with Paul Cook leading them to wins in both clashes that season.
That included a 3-2 triumph in Wales on Boxing Day, which saw the Blues battle back from two goals down to claim the points.
If this evening’s tie finishes level after 90 minutes it will go straight to penalties, with no extra-time being played.
TEAM NEWS
Denver Hume, Joe Morrell and skipper Clark Robertson could all play a part after returning to full fitness.
Jayden Reid (hamstring) and Louis Thompson (leg) are both sidelined, while Colby Bishop is a doubt with a tight quad.
Offrande Zanzala (hamstring) is the only absentee for Newport, with Aaron Wildig and Robbie Willmott shaking off knocks.
