Ogilvie: Cup Success Can Provide Momentum

Defender looks ahead to Cardiff test

8 August 2022

Connor Ogilvie does not believe that the Carabao Cup will be a distraction for Pompey.

They head to south Wales for a first round clash with Championship outfit Cardiff on Tuesday evening.

The game comes off the back of consecutive League One stalemates with Sheffield Wednesday and Lincoln.

And Ogilvie believes that a positive result at the Cardiff City Stadium can help give the Blues a kick-start

The defender said: “The focus for us is on trying to get our first win of the season and try to build a bit of momentum.

“We're looking for the right balance between attack and the defence, but we’re confident that will come and we can grow as a group.

"If we can get a result and go further in this competition, then we can try to take that form into the league."

“The aim is always to keep things tight at the back and then look to get a few goals at the other end of the pitch.

“Cardiff are a Championship side, though, and so it’s always tough, but there’s always belief that we’ve got enough in our changing room.

“If we can get a result and go further in this competition, then we can try to take that form into the league.

“But it’s pretty warm out there at the moment. I suppose that’s just past and parcel of this stage of the season and it won’t be like this in a couple of months!”

Ogilvie netted Pompey’s first goal of the season at Hillsborough and was then part of a back-line that denied Lincoln a single shot on target.

He said: “It was nice to chip in with a header and then follow that up with a clean sheet on Saturday, but the main focus for me is on helping the team to win.”
