Reasons To Be Cheerful

Cowley highlights best moments from victory over Cambridge

16 August 2022

There was plenty to please Danny Cowley during Pompey’s impressive dismantling of Cambridge at Fratton Park.

The hosts recovered from falling behind to blow their opponents away, starting with the in-form Colby Bishop’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Ronan Curtis, Michael Jacobs and Connor Ogilvie then struck after the break to ensure they would ease to all three points.

And the way his side stuck at the task, the manner of the goals they scored and the fervent backing from the stands were all highlighted by a jubilant Cowley.

The Blues boss said: “It was definitely an improvement from our last home performance and I was pleased with the character shown.

“Cambridge are awkward opponents and have a style of play that suits the guys they have at their disposal.

“We’d just started to find some rhythm when we conceded what was a really poor goal, but we kept believing.

“Scoring the equaliser just before half-time certainly helped and then we looked a good team after the break.

"The support was fantastic and even when we went behind, there was no negativity. Everyone stayed with the players and they responded to that."

“You have to earn the right to play sometimes, but we connected better and counter-pressed well. We were able to suffocate them and the intensity increased.

“The support was fantastic and even when we went behind, there was no negativity. Everyone stayed with the players and they responded to that.

“There were some nice goals from us – and more from crosses, which we know we needed to be better at.

“Our preference is to be able to play through teams, but you can’t always do that and at times you have to go around them.

“We’re five unbeaten now, although this isn’t a time to get ahead of ourselves because it’s still a work in progress and good teams put their foot on the gas.”

Marlon Pack excelled for Pompey and was feted by the home faithful when he was substituted for Jay Mingi in the closing stages.

Cowley said: “For any youngster who was there watching at Fratton Park, that’s how you play centre midfield.

“He was good for the full 90 minutes and deserved the standing ovation he received when he came off late on.”
