Pompey Academy fought from behind to win at title-chasing Bournemouth in their final Youth Alliance League fixture of 2022.

Kian Tydeman converted a cross from Ollie Morgan in the opening stages to ensure the hosts led at the break.

But the Blues struck four times in the space of just 13 minutes in the second half to leave the Cherries stunned.

Sam Folarin (pictured) collected a pass from Harvey Laidlaw and fired home to level the contest before leading marksman Koby Mottoh struck again just moments later.

Josh Dockerill then converted a corner from Adam Payce to give the visitors a cushion, with Folarin quickly finding the net again to put the result beyond doubt.

Remy Rees-Dottin did reduce Bournemouth’s deficit late on, but it proved no more than a consolation.

Lead professional development phase coach Zesh Rehman said: “We had a slow start to the game and fell behind. We showed our opponents too much respect and allowed them to dictate play.

“Our defending was indecisive and deep, resulting in us not winning enough of the 1v1 battles, while the courage to play forward was not at the required standard, with too many negative passes.

“We only managed to create one chance in the first half after Koby had made a good run in behind, but couldn’t find the target.

“I felt that a triple change was necessary at the break to inject more intent and urgency into our play and Mitch, Gab and Brian all made a positive impact.

“After a good discussion, the response from the players was exactly what was needed. We showed more personality to risk forward passes, with the defensive line a lot higher, braver and on the front foot, ready to intercept.

“In the space of 13 minutes we scored four goals, playing with passion and a point to prove. The boys need this mentality from the start of games.

“The equaliser came from a well angled ball over the top from Harvey that Sam ran onto, bustling his way into the box and showing excellent skill to create space before finding the roof of the net.

“Gabriel Kamavuako then found Koby with a penetrative pass and he scored with a placed shot into the corner from just inside the area.

“Josh timed his run to the near post from Adam’s corner and we have done a lot of work on attacking set-pieces with Sam Hudson this season. It’s always pleasing to see us score from a training ground move.

“Spencer Spurway then found Koby on the halfway line and he played away from pressure to get the ball to Harvey.

“He then got his second assist of this day with an excellent lofted pass into the stride of Sam, who timed his run well before finishing with composure.

“More than 30 of our assists and goals in all competitions this season have come from first years Koby and Harvey. This is fantastic considering they have been playing as wing-backs.

“We gave away a cheap goal late on and our defenders must learn to recognise when to go over the opponents’ press to relieve pressure at times.

“We always emphasise the important of the process and the performance. If we get the latter correct, then a positive result follows more often than not. We certainly got an improved one in the second half.

“It has been a busy week for the academy staff, with lots of half-season meetings with players and parents being conducted.

“These personal development reviews included a summary of the players’ overall holistic development to date, with realistic targets set for each individual.

“Education is also an important part of the scholar programme and it’s no coincidence that those who are self-motivated independent learners are also excelling on the pitch.

“The players must invest and commit fully to all areas of their development in order to drive the standards – on and off the pitch – more frequently.

“I would like to thank Greg, James, Sam, Ninad, Jack Rogers, Jack Hicks-Flynn and Max Whittingham for all of their daily hard work and collaboration, making my role very enjoyable.

“I also want to wish outgoing goalkeeper coach Dan Hill good luck with his new challenge. He has worked with outstanding commitment and will be missed.

“As 2022 draws to a close, we must celebrate the successes we have had in terms of the appearances in Papa Johns Trophy and Hampshire Cup matches, as well as regular first team training exposure and FA Cup inclusion for several players.

“The aim at the end of the season is to be a step closer to the culture we want and to be in a better position than we were at the start.”

Pompey: Smith; Fox, Dockerill, Spurway; Mottoh, Simpson (Aston 46), Payce, Murray (Quarm 46), Laidlaw; Howell (Kamavuako 46), Folarin (Hurst 90+3)
