Cowley: Criticism Is Fair

Boss reflects on defeat at Wycombe

4 December 2022

Danny Cowley admitted that Pompey were far below their best in a defeat at Wycombe.

Anis Mehmeti and Garath McCleary struck at either end of the contest to ensure a first defeat for seven weeks.

And with little in the way of clear-cut openings going forward, a sold out away end made their feelings known at the final whistle.

Cowley believes that disapproval was valid and wanted to see a lot more from his side at Adams Park.

The Blues boss said: “We’re a proud football club and we underperformed, so we deserve the criticism that will come our way.

“We’re really disappointed. You know what to expect when you come to Wycombe and we didn’t reach our levels.

“You have to earn the right to play and we didn’t do that in the first half. We were poor physically and didn’t win anywhere near enough duels.

“There was no platform for us to build on and then we conceded a soft goal. It was a great finish, but we should have dealt with the build-up.

“I did think that we improved in the second half and were able to wrestle back some control and momentum.

“But we were still short of quality in the final third, whether that was the execution or the decision making.

“Reeco Hackett came on and was brave enough to take the ball – which we had lacked – while also giving us more energy.

“We’ve been really proud of our consistency and it’s only our third loss in a competitive division, but it wasn’t anywhere near what we expect.”

Pompey had knocked MK Dons out of the FA Cup the previous week by playing with a three-man back-line and Cowley stuck with the same system.

He explained: “We have injuries to all of our right-backs, so we didn’t really have any choice with the formation.

“Zak Swanson has a stomach issue. He came off with it against MK Dons and hasn’t been able to train. He tried at the end of the week, but it wasn’t right.”
