Boss looks ahead to televised Wycombe test

3 December 2022

It is certainly not a novel situation for Pompey fans to be able to watch their side on television.

There have been three matches picked for live broadcast since mid-October alone, while others were available to view on iFollow.

But those tuning into Sky Sports Football on Sunday lunchtime will discover an altogether different experience.

There are plenty of innovative features for the League One match at Wycombe, including – but not limited to – in-game thoughts from the benches and club personnel on co-commentary duties.

It is an experiment Danny Cowley is happy to be a part of, although he is mainly concerned with how his players fare on the pitch.

The Blues boss said: “We’re appreciative of Sky and the support they give to English football, which has the best and deepest pyramid in the world.

“There are a few unique ideas and I fully understand why they’re looking to do these things at this level.

“We can give our supporters and the general public some interesting access and don’t have anything to hide.

“Our main focus is ultimately the performance and result on Sunday, though, so that’s where my energy lies.

“Gareth Ainsworth has done a brilliant job at Wycombe, taking them from the bottom of League Two into the Championship.

“There is a lot of quality and experience in their squad and we know they’ll finish in top end of the division again this season.

“But we believe we’re in a good moment and there’s a positive feeling within the group, so we’re looking forward to attacking the game.”

Pompey have plenty of fixtures to negotiate over the festive period, but fans can be forgiven for looking ahead to next month’s FA Cup third round tie.

Cowley said: “It’s a brilliant draw. My wife’s family are all Tottenham supporters and it’s nice to go to what will be a new ground for many, including me.

“I’m really pleased for our fans and also our players because it’s great to be able to pit yourselves against world class opponents.

“It’s something we can all look forward to, although right now we’re concentrating on what’s a really busy schedule over Christmas.”

Cowley has also revealed that Joe Morrell could feature at Adams Park on Sunday after jetting back from Qatar following Wales’ World Cup exit.

He said: “Joe returned to Cardiff on the Thursday night and then got home early the following morning.

“We gave him the option of having the weekend off, but he decided to come in and train on Saturday, so we’ll make a call on him after that.”
