Cowley’s New Year Wish

Boss looking for three points against Charlton

31 December 2022

Pompey finished the calendar year with a performance to be proud of against promotion favourites Ipswich.

But the game ended in frustration after the visitors grabbed a last-gasp leveller and now attention turns to the first match of 2023.

Charlton are the visitors to the south coast and looking for points of their own to climb away from the League One drop zone.

And while Pompey have rarely experienced defeat at Fratton Park over the past 12 months, Cowley knows more victories are required.

The Blues boss said: “A lot of players found their best level on Thursday and we can take plenty of confidence from that.

“We’re all working hard to find a win in the league, although in that period we have had a lot of cup victories.

“At Fratton Park, we’ve lost one of the past 25 matches, which isn’t a bad record, but we have drawn a lot in there that we’d like to have won.

“We know what we have to do and we’ll keep working hard towards that – I can’t think of a better way to start 2023 than with three points.

“Charlton are a team that we played relatively recently, although an awful lot has happened since then.

“A new manager has come in and got a good result Boxing Day – they probably felt they could have won – and are capable of causing you a lot of problems.

“But we love to play at Fratton Park. A third game in six days will ask a lot of us physically, but we’re ready to attack the challenge head on.

“If there is the same feeling that we had in the stadium against Ipswich, it will give us real energy to perform at our best.”

Pompey have had to contend with plenty of illness and injury over the festive period, while Colby Bishop and Clark Robertson were both forced off against Ipswich.

Cowley said: “Colby took a nasty one in the ribs and we just have to see how he comes through. It took his breath away, but he’s a tough boy and can normally deal with it.

“Games come so quickly at this time of year, so we’ll just wait and see, but he was able to get out on the grass on Saturday, which was positive.

“Clark came off at half-time, but it was more of a tightness in the hip than anything else, so we’re hopeful.

“There are a lot of injuries, but people are making steps in the right direction. Louis Thompson got another good session under his belt, while Jay Mingi trained again and is available for selection.”
