Blues reach Hampshire Cup quarter-finals

20 December 2022

A youthful Pompey side eased into the quarter-finals of the Hampshire Cup with victory over Wessex League side Andover New Street.

Jamie Howell’s close-range finish and a Koby Mottoh penalty ensured they were cruising at the interval at Foxcotte Park.

And the Blues made sure of their progress after the restart, as Adam Payce bagged a brace before Gabriel Kamavuako wrapped things up from the spot.

After a slow start to proceedings, Pompey soon managed to take control and dominated the first half.

A deflected effort from Michael Davis that was palmed behind by Bastian Smith was as close as the hosts came to opening the scoring.

Instead it was the Blues who forged ahead on 16 minutes after Alfie Bridgman swapped passes with Payce down the left.

The former sent a low delivery into the mixer and HOWELL got on the end of it to force the ball into the roof of the net.

And the visitors soon had a chance to double their advantage when Mottoh was sent tumbling to the turf inside the box.

Referee Alex Blake pointed straight to the spot and MOTTOH picked himself up to find the bottom corner.

The lead was almost extended even further, as Howell turned a cross from Mottoh narrowly over the bar.

And only a fine challenge from Matt Scott prevented Payce from being able to provide Howell with a simple finish.

It was Howell who went close again before the break, skipping past a challenge and testing the handling of Ben Rodwell from outside the box.

Pompey did not take their foot off the accelerator once the action restarted and immediately got back on the front foot.

And they had a third goal on 57 minutes, as PAYCE raced onto Howell’s pass and was left with just Rodwell to beat.

The keeper did keep out the initial effort, but the ball ran loose and the Blues skipper was left with a simple finish.

There was nearly more joy just past the hour mark, with Howell arrowing a shot inches past the post after being teed-up by Bridgman.

Andover almost reduced their deficit moments later, as Cameron Thatcher nodded against the woodwork from an Eddie Perrett corner.

It looked like the contest was winding down, only for the Blues to add a couple of late goals to their total.

PAYCE notched his second of the night with a composed finish into the bottom corner after being left one-on-one with Rodwell.

And when substitute KAMAVUAKO was fouled in the box by Lee Morris, he picked himself up to convert the penalty.
