Referee Neil Hair blew the final whistle as soon as the ball hit the back of the net.
And Joe Pigott’s 25-yard free-kick was a great way to wrap up a 3-0 Papa Johns Trophy win against Stevenage.
The striker had previously gone close to scoring on several occasions on a freezing night at Fratton Park.
So he was pleased to finally hit the target deep into stoppage-time as the Blues booked their place in the quarter-finals.
Pigott said: “It was a nice way to finish the game and overall it was a really positive 90 minutes from the team.
“Ronan said it was too far out for me, but I knew it was mine straight away! We always have a battle after training about who takes them and thankfully this one nestled in the net.
"The keeper stepped the other way because he thought I was going for the other corner, but I knew it was going in."
“There was one game earlier in the season when I wasn’t playing and we had about five on the edge of the box and I was just thinking I’d love the opportunity.
“The keeper stepped the other way because he thought I was going for the other corner, but I knew it was going in.
“With a bit more sharpness and a better touch, I could have scored two or three, although I was happy with my movement.”
Pigott was impressed with the way Pompey dominated the tie against a side sitting second in the League Two standings.
He said: “We had a really decent start and managed to find some fluidity that we were able to carry right the way through.
“Any win is a good one – no matter what competition it comes in. We haven’t played that way for a while and it felt comfortable out there.”
