Sean Raggett was delighted that Pompey were rewarded for their efforts against Burton.
A 2-1 victory saw them record a first league victory of the calendar year and climb up to 11th in the standings.
It was the defender who opened the scoring with a header, while Michael Jacobs then doubled the lead before Gassan Ahadme struck for the visitors.
And after a cruel defeat at Oxford at the weekend, Raggett was relieved to see Pompey return to winning ways.
He said: “We played really well in the first half and got ourselves into a two-goal lead, but then they scored against the run of play.
“That’s obviously going to give them a lift and when a side hasn’t had a win in a while, you sometimes have to dig in.
"All runs have to start from somewhere, so we’ll take the positives from this, while also looking where we can do better."
“We saw those qualities on Saturday and then I think you saw them again towards the end of this game. We showed character to get the result.
“I thought we were unlucky against Oxford, but this time we came out on the right side of it, so we’re really pleased.
“All runs have to start from somewhere, so we’ll take the positives from this, while also looking where we can do better.”
Raggett’s header from a Jacobs corner was just the second time the centre-back has found the net for Pompey this season.
He said “I’ve been disappointed not to score a more this season because I usually chip in with a few here and there.
“Hopefully I can now get a few extra for us during the rest of the season. I fancy myself in every game.”
