Thompson: Now To Build

Midfielder looks ahead to Doncaster test

10 February 2022

Pompey recorded their first league victory of the calendar year by seeing off Burton earlier in the week.

But Louis Thompson wants to ensure they follow that up with another positive result against Doncaster on Saturday.

The Blues have climbed a couple of places to 11th in the standings and are aiming to close the gap on the top six further.

And Thompson is looking forward to being back at Fratton Park to face the side currently propping up the rest of the division.

The midfielder said: “We needed that Burton result massively after an unfortunate result on the previous Saturday, when we showed a lot of fight and spirit.

“That Oxford game almost felt like a bit of a turning point, though, because it galvanised all the boys and we showed real character.

“A lot was against us, but we stuck together and showed real spirit, which helped us get three points against Burton.

"There are certainly things that we can add to our performance, but it was a good start and one we want to build on against Doncaster."

“Hopefully we can use the result as a springboard for the weeks to come. It can certainly stand us in good stead.

“There are certainly things that we can add to our performance, but it was a good start and one we want to build on against Doncaster.

“We know we have to win football matches if we want to reach our goals – regardless of who the opposition is.

“So we’ll adopt a positive mindset and the fans will be behind us again, which is always a massive help.”

Fellow midfielder Shaun Williams is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a fractured vertebrae.

Thompson said: “As a group we have to make sure he gets everything he needs from us to ensure his recovery goes well.

“Injuries make an impact and can be tough to deal with mentally, which can get overlooked, so we have to support him.

“But I feel we’ve got a strong midfield – and a strong squad, with quality throughout. We all have to step up and push ourselves.”
