Blues Bring In Walker

Striker arrives on loan

18 January 2022

Pompey have signed Tyler Walker on loan from Championship side Coventry for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old striker will wear the number nine shirt during his time at Fratton Park.

He will be linking up with Blues boss Danny Cowley again, with the pair previously working together at Lincoln.

Walker netted 16 goals in 34 appearances during an impressive spell with the Imps, which followed another prolific stint at Mansfield.

Blues boss Danny Cowley said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be able to bring Tyler to Portsmouth Football Club.

“It’s something that we’ve been working on for quite some time and didn’t think it was going to be possible.

“I have probably spoken to his agent more than I’ve spoken to my wife over the past couple of months!

“He’s a boy that we know well and first spotted him playing for Nottingham Forest under-23s when we were at Lincoln.

“There were a couple of loan moves during that time and we tried to sign him, but Mansfield gazumped us at the last minute!

“But we were fortunately able to take him the next year and he was everything we thought he was going to be.

“He’s got fantastic movement, is a clean finisher and has good link play – all the qualities that we need in that area of the pitch.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing him in a Pompey shirt and I’m sure the fans are excited about that as well.”

Walker – who has represented England up to under-20 level – began his career with Nottingham Forest.

He gained experience with brief loan spells at Burton, Stevenage, Port Vale and Bolton before being sent to Mansfield for the 2018/19 campaign.

It proved be a successful season for Walker, who struck 26 goals in 52 games and was named in the League Two ‘Team of the Year’ as the Stags narrowly missed out on promotion into the third tier.

Lincoln was his next stop, although good form – which included a run of six strikes in five matches – at Sincil Bank saw the forward recalled early by Forest.

The son of former England international Des Walker, he made a permanent switch to Coventry in August 2020 and has found the net on 11 occasions for the Championship outfit.
