Carter: Promotion The Target

Defender aiming high after arriving on loan

15 January 2022

Hayden Carter has stepped down from the Championship and now wants to help Pompey get back there.

The defender has arrived at Fratton Park on a loan deal from high-flying Blackburn until the end of the season.

He has featured for a Rovers side chasing a spot in the Premier League this term, but is now looking for a regular run of matches.

And Carter is confident that  the Blues have what it takes to mount their own challenge for promotion.

The 22-year-old said: “I know the history of this club and it’s one where I feel I can get the best out of myself.

“I haven’t played as much as I would like this season and believe that coming here gives me a good opportunity to get games at a good level.

“In the Championship you learn a lot about how players use their bodies and the different styles you can come up against.

"I want to play as many games as possible, win as many games as possible and keep as many clean sheets as possible to help get this club into a higher division."

“First and foremost I’ll get in front of anything to help keep clean sheets and then I like to get the ball down and start attacks from the back.

“The manager has told me that the fans – and the city of Portsmouth – are pretty determined and I like to think it’s the same for me.

“I want to play as many games as possible, win as many games as possible and keep as many clean sheets as possible to help get this club into a higher division.

“There’s a really good set of lads and everyone’s been really welcoming. I don’t see why promotion can’t be a real target.”

Carter spent the second half of last season on loan at Burton in League One, helping drag them away from the drop zone.

He said: “My time there was very beneficial, although that was a different scenario because it was about staying up.

“I was able to get a feel of the league and some of the teams that I’ll now be coming up against while I’m here.”
