Hirst: Getting Back On Track

Striker hoping Charlton clash can provide a spark

30 January 2022

Pompey had been flying before Christmas, with a nine-match unbeaten run in League One that included six victories.

But Covid outbreaks – both here and in the opposition camp – halted their progress and 2022 has seen progress stall.

The four league fixtures since the turn of the year have resulted in two draws and two defeats, with the Blues now down in 11th spot, albeit with games in hand on the sides they are chasing.

And George Hirst is targeting Monday night’s south coast clash with Charlton to get them back on track.

The striker said: “You look back to the game we played against them earlier in the season and we were unlucky to not take all three points.

“It was a pretty open contest and an enjoyable one to play in – these are the kind of big games you want to be a part of.

"We need to start scoring more goals – everyone is aware of that. We’re certainly not blind to the fact."

“Hopefully it’s a match that can start us off on the right path towards another winning run, like we had before Christmas.

“It’s going to be a tough game, but we’ve been preparing well all week and looking to go into the game firing.

“We need to start scoring more goals – everyone is aware of that. We’re certainly not blind to the fact.

“But we’re working hard to put things right and if everything comes together, then I’ve no doubt we can get back on track. Hopefully that starts on Monday.”

The Fratton fixture was moved from the weekend so it can be screened live to the nation on Sky Sports.

Hirst said: “You don’t get a load of games on television at this level and I think it does give the boys a bit of a boost.

“They are that little bit more special when they don’t come along all the time and can perhaps give you that extra five per cent.”
