Blues progress in PDFA Cup

19 January 2022

Pompey Women eased into the semi-finals of the PDFA Cup with a 13-0 victory over AFC Portchester at Westleigh Park.

Shannon Albuery and Cherelle Khassal added to their already hefty tallies with five goals each, while Rosie McDonnell, Emma Jones and Jaime Gotch also found the target.

Jay Sadler made five changes from the side that were disappointingly beaten by Plymouth in the league at the weekend.

Libby Kingshott was handed a start between the sticks, while Lena Stroem made her debut and there were returns for Danielle Rowe, Dani Lane and McDonnell.

Pompey looked to attack from the very start, but their opponents held out for 18 minutes before the dam was broken.

Khassal stole possession and played in her fellow forward ALBUERY, who slotted home to open the scoring.

AFC Portchester initially reacted well to that setback, only for a series of goals in quick succession to put the result beyond doubt.

KHASSAL got on the scoresheet herself, courtesy of a neat finish at the back post from a Lane delivery.

Then, just a few minutes later, KHASSAL seized upon a loose pass in the visitors’ defence and found the net.

Pompey fans did not have long to wait for another goal, as Portchester failed to deal with a corner and ALBUERY poked home.

And ALBUERY completed her hat-trick late in the first half by nodding home a Tamsin de Bunsen corner.

But there was amazingly still time for two more goals before the break, with KHASSAL able to celebrate her own treble, finishing a delicate de Bunsen pass with a half-volley.

De Bunsen then hit a long-range strike that left the crossbar rattling and Albuery squared the loose ball for McDONNELL to score.

Pompey kept their foot firmly on the accelerator once the action restarted and KHASSAL raced clear to find the top corner.

And KHASSAL scored again soon after, finding the net from a few yards out after exchanging passes with Albuery.

JONES came off the bench and marked her return with a goal to ensure the Blues reached double figures.

ALBUERY provided the assist for that one and then rounded the keeper to increase the lead even further.

Pompey did ease off slightly, but finished the contest with a flourish and ALBUERY had her fifth of the night after de Bunsen’s effort was parried clear.

But it was left to defender GOTCH to round off the scoring, turning in the box and firing home the hosts’ 13th goal of the night.
