Ronan Curtis has broken the record for most Pompey goals scored by a single player in the 21st century.

And the Republic of Ireland international achieved that feat in style, with a late brace to secure a dramatic Papa John’s Trophy victory at Exeter and increase his personal tally to 45 strikes.

The Blues had been trailing 2-1 with a minute of normal time remaining, but Curtis nodded home a Michael Jacobs free-kick to level before hitting a stoppage-time winner.

It saw him pull clear of Yakubu, having drawn level with the Nigerian striker by netting at Accrington all the way back on October 23.

Curtis said: “I’ve been waiting a long time for it! It’s a huge honour for me and my family and an amazing feeling.

“There are some massive people on that list and I’m grateful to be up there with those quality names. It’s not bad company to be in.

“It’s always nice to help the lads get a win and it’s similar to the last time we played Exeter in this competition.

“We showed the right attitude and commitment to get through to the next round after conceding late on.

“It was a great ball in from Crackers and I was able to get on the end of it and then to get the winner in front of our fans was lovely.

“I thought Reeco was going to smash it into the top corner, but he kept coming across the box and it opened up for me.

“We probably took our foot off the gas a bit in the second half. At the end of the day, though, all that matters is we got the win.

“Now we look forward to going to Cambridge on Tuesday. The games are coming thick and fast, but that’s what you want after that long period without a match.”
