Thompson: One Hell Of A Game

Midfielder excited by Sunderland test

20 January 2022

It is a mouth-watering contest between two of the biggest clubs in League One.

Between them, Pompey and Sunderland are able to boast eight top-flight titles and four FA Cup final triumphs.

There have been some competitive meetings in the third tier over the past few years and the sides clash again on Wearside this weekend.

And Louis Thompson is looking forward to the Blues being able to test themselves against the team currently sitting third in the standings.

The midfielder said: “Sunderland are always tough to play against and there’s a little bit of history with Pompey from recent years.

“It’s going to be an important game for us regardless of that, though, and the boys are going to be well up for it.

"This is a well supported club and the fans always get behind the lads. They are going to be there in large numbers and making a lot of noise."

“You want to play in the biggest stadiums – and this is the biggest one you’re going to find in League One.

“It’s certainly going to be a hell of an occasion and it’s one that we all want to be a part of come Saturday.

“This is a well supported club and the fans always get behind the lads. They are going to be there in large numbers and making a lot of noise.

“That’s exactly what we’ll need and as players, we have to keep working towards a common goal of winning games.”

Thompson was sidelined with a hip injury at the start of last month, but has now featured in each of the past four matches.

He said: “I’m feeling good and that’s only going to improve with the more minutes I get, so long may it continue.”
